Review of Freida McFadden’s Dear Debbie

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Going into Dear Debbie, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from my first Freida McFadden novel. While it didn’t end up becoming a new favourite, I found it to be an entertaining and suspenseful read that kept me guessing until the final pages.

After hearing so many readers praise Freida McFadden’s books, I decided that Dear Debbie would be the perfect place to start. The novel quickly captured my attention with its suspenseful atmosphere and fast-moving plot, making for an enjoyable reading experience.

The story is relatively short, making it an ideal choice for readers looking for a quick thriller. McFadden wastes little time building intrigue, and I was immediately drawn into the mystery surrounding the characters and their circumstances. Her writing style is straightforward and easy to read, which made the book fly by.

While I enjoyed the story, I wouldn’t place it among my favourite thrillers. Although the premise was interesting and the mystery kept me engaged, I found myself wanting a little more depth in certain areas. At times, I felt there was an opportunity to explore the characters’ motivations and relationships in greater detail, which would have made me feel more emotionally invested in their outcomes. That said, I was invested enough to keep reading and eager to discover how everything would unfold.

One of the things that resonated with me most was the constant sense of uncertainty. Just when I thought I had worked out where the story was heading, new information would emerge that made me question my assumptions. That feeling of never being entirely sure of the truth kept me turning the pages.

For me, the strongest aspect of the book was the ending. Without venturing into spoiler territory, the final twist genuinely surprised me and added an extra dimension to the story. It’s one of those endings that encourages you to look back and reconsider everything you’ve just read.

Overall, Dear Debbie was an enjoyable introduction to Freida McFadden’s work. It may not have become a new favourite, but it delivered an entertaining reading experience with plenty of suspense and a memorable conclusion. While I would have appreciated more character development, the fast pacing, intriguing mystery, and well-executed twist have made me curious to explore more of McFadden’s novels, particularly her bestselling psychological thrillers.

It’s also worth noting that Dear Debbie won the inaugural Astro Book Award for Best Mystery & Thriller, demonstrating its popularity with readers of the genre.

If you’ve read Dear Debbie or any of Freida McFadden’s other books, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Which of her novels would you recommend next, and do you think they offer stronger character development than Dear Debbie?
